Composed during the period of social readjustment in pre-war France, the First Cello Concerto marked Saint-Saëns' acceptance as a composer within the established order, and for a long time it was one of his most admired works. The recognition of the Second Cello Concerto, with its incredible technicality, took longer, although its central movement includes one of Saint-Saëns' most sublime melodies. The prodigious and famous work The Swan appears alongside the lesser-known Suite in D minor inspired by Bach. Finally, with the introduction of the Romance, this program contains the complete works of Saint-Saëns for cello and orchestra.
