From Ménilmontant to Joinville le Pont, from the banks of the Seine to the banks of the Marne, the guinguettes are a true part of French culture from the early century. The origin of the term is the word guinguette which designates the cheap white wine that is drunk there by the water. Young people, dressed up for the occasion, gather in these open-air cabarets in the Paris suburbs to dance and have fun to the sound of popular orchestras. They also practice water sports: regattas, rowing, and diving competitions. The concept would then spread throughout France after the war, notably thanks to the development of paid holidays and weekly rest. Even today, the century-old tradition of these magical places endures!
