Four Classic Albums

The New York hardbop pianist, Freddie Redd, is perhaps best known for his score for the stage in Jack Geller's film "The Connection," which we are of course including here in our selection. Not only did Freddie write the music, but alongside other musicians like Jackie McLean, he also performed on stage and in the film. The success of the project was so significant that Freddie was able to tour the States and Europe, where he played in London and Paris. Perhaps he is associated with the piece because he did not seem to have greater successes in the following years. This is unfortunate because Freddie made many high-quality albums, three of which are included here. A precious, hard-to-find album recorded in Sweden alongside the Riverside version "San Francisco Suite" and another for Blue Note, "Shades of Redd." The artists Freddie Redd collaborated with include Tiny Grimes, Art Blakey, Ernestine Anderson, Tina Brooks, Jackie McLean, Paul Chambers, Charles Mingus, Billy Higgins, and Lou Donaldson.
