"This superb music, although of a very different aesthetic from that of Mozart, also seems to borrow repeatedly from the writing modes – imitations, solos, homophony – used by the illustrious predecessor for a given text fragment. Sometimes it is merely conventions, such as composing a large fugue on the words of the Offertory: quam olim, Abrahae… Perhaps it is merely coincidence, but shouldn't we see a tribute in the fact, for example, that the tonal plan of Suppé's work almost rigorously follows that of the Requiem from 1791? In any case, Suppé's Requiem is a brilliant and serious work, composed by a master of entertainment, which deserves to take its place among the ten or twelve greatest Requiems in the history of religious music." - Bernard Lallement.
