Sonate pour arpeggione et piano Quintette à cordes
Description
The fifth album in the Pentatone Oxingale series features two Schubert masterpieces - the Arpeggione Sonata in A minor, D821 and the String Quintet in C major, D956. Schubert composed Sonata D821 for the arpeggione, a 6-string instrument similar to the viola da gamba, invented in 1723 and forgotten a little more than ten years later. Nowadays the Sonata is usually played by the cello or viola. For this recording the Grammy Award-nominated cellist Matt Haimovitz is accompanied by the renowned pianist Itamar Golan. Completed only a few months before his untimely death in November 1828, Schubert's String Quintet in C major, famous for the combination of string quartet and second cello, was premiered in 1850 and published only in 1853. Considered today one of the pinnacles of the chamber music repertoire, it is hard to imagine that it remained unpublished for so long.
