Strange, Bidduph is gradually unveiling recordings of Pinchas Zukerman that Sony had left dormant. This collection of Schubert's chamber violin works, recorded with his faithful Marc Neikrug between March 1993 and October 1995 at the Manhattan Center in New York, had been sitting in the multinational's archives. Hearing how Zukerman phrases the dark melody that opens the grand Fantaisie in C, I wonder why. After all, everything is there: the perfection of bowing, the radiant intimacy, but also when necessary, the taste for a striking line, the lyrical sense so diffuse, so pervasive that Schubert infused into his three Sonatinas has not found such naturalness, such obviousness since the old recording by Johanna Martzy, to say the least! When the dance rhythms appear, the bow lightens, on the tip, capturing the half-character style that defines everything Schubert wrote for the violin. Pinchas Zukerman perceives like no one else behind these subtle pages a vocal writing that comes from the world of Lieder, and he also knows how to give a symphonic breadth to the Duo D. 574, without Mark Neikrug ever taking the lead: what it means to accompany, in terms of music and humility, which is exactly what Schubert desires. And when Zukerman takes his viola to sing the Arpeggione, it suddenly reveals entirely different landscapes, a vast lyrical ballad in the open air.
