Father And Son Lieder romantiques allemands

Published some time ago and reissued this year, this CD brings together father and son in a beautiful recital of well-known and lesser-known lieder. The two tenors and their accompanist have crafted a program featuring several great names of German Romanticism (why only one Schumann?), arranging the original compositions for two voices when it had not been done, as with Brahms. This allows for a fresh perspective on many classics, sometimes at the cost of a certain sophistication, without truly affecting their intrinsic charm. Another aspect of the CD is that it includes works by less famous composers that fit in well here, even when one title is by a 20th-century musician or when five others are lieder accompanied by harmonica. The lied thus returns to its popular origins and the intimacy of its familial setting. Originality and coherence remain the hallmark of the Prégardien label, with the voices not merely presenting the songs in harmony but also unfolding them incidentally into true little dialogues. This individualizes each contributor's performance, as the interpreters have their own sensitivity, even if the patina is different. Overall, a very warm Liederabend. (Alain Monnier)
