More than thirty years (!) after their first record of the last symphonies by Mozart, Frans Brüggen and the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century have decided to release a new version of these contrasting yet complementary works in the series The Grand Tour by Glossa. Throughout his long career at the helm of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, the Dutch master has diligently engaged with the music of the Salzburg genius, whose symphonies have frequently been programmed in concert. Nothing proves that these three symphonies - K551 Jupiter, K543 in E-flat major, and K550, universally known as "Mozart's 40th" - were performed during the composer's lifetime, but they are among his most well-known works. Frans Brüggen revisits them with a freshness that seems eternal, which permeates his latest recordings, always made in concert: the concertos for horn, for violin, the clarinet concerto, and the Requiem. This new album of Mozart's last three symphonies, in two live CDs recorded in Rotterdam, showcases Brüggen's unique artistry balancing the expressiveness and spontaneity required by these masterpieces from 1788.
