What Sinatra, arranger Riddle, and producer Voyle Gilmore achieved was a record that deals with a unique late-night mood, marked by doubt, emotional failure, and lost love. Depressing? Is the blues depressing? Sinatra tackled an aspect of life generally ignored by the ever-optimistic music world and turned it into art. And we have been copying it ever since.
