Frescobaldi And The South - Intendomi Chi Può Che M’Intend’Io

Description

In 1594, Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, arrived in Ferrara for his marriage to Eleonora d'Este. The encounter of the noble musician with the musical universe of Ferrara, particularly with Luzzasco Luzzaschi, would greatly influence the formation of the young Girolamo Frescobaldi. In his maturity, the native of Ferrara achieved a very personal fusion of musical structures of northern Italian origin (particularly Venetian) and the musical experimentation of the southern school. The aim of this project is to explore the reciprocal influences between the harpsichord school of the Kingdom of Naples and Girolamo Frescobaldi. The works of great experimenters from the 16th and 17th centuries (J. De Macque, Rodio, Stella) will be discussed, as well as the composers of the following generation who transposed and reinterpreted Frescobaldi's teachings (Storace, Salvatore, L. Rossi). We will also focus on some of his contemporaries who pursued a parallel path (M. Rossi). This fertile musical exchange, which culminates in the very personal innovations of Frescobaldi, perfectly illustrates the spirit of musical experimentation and innovation typical of the early 17th century, a time that, like few others, sought and celebrated aesthetic renewal.
