‘Weather Bird’, the duo recorded in Chicago in 1928 by Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines, is a classic of the art of jazz. Now, after almost a century, a trumpeter and a pianist of our time are creating together a collection of pieces that largely manages to convey the exuberance of this old recording, but also supported by rich experience and deep listening. In their album ‘Things to say’, trumpeter Flavio Boltro and pianist Fabio Giachino immediately show that they are in tune.
Recorded in the dark winter of 2020, still plagued by the pandemic, it traces an emotional arc that moves from sad reflections to an energy full of positivity. It does not recount 2020 or the specific Italian reality during the pandemic, but broadly expresses the complex and changing atmospheres of that year. And it is also absolutely, totally enjoyable to listen to.
Great jazz has always managed to overcome adversity, perhaps that is its uniqueness. And ‘Things to Say’ confidently fits into this glorious tradition. (Brian Morton)
