Description

Sebastian Fagerlund has established himself as one of the most important European composers of his generation. He studied composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Erkki Jokinen and graduated in 2004. Fagerlund's work is particularly distinguished by his interest in large forms and a profound vision of music as an expression of fundamental questions and existential experiences. A highly virtuosic instrumental sense as well as great musicality are evident in all his works, creating musical dramas where enormous expression is combined with intensity and vivid communication, as well as an openness to various musical traditions. His works have been commissioned and performed by many leading orchestras, renowned conductors, and musicians around the world. His output ranges from opera to chamber music and solo works, with the most significant pieces being his concertos and orchestral works. In 2011, Fagerlund received the prestigious Teosto Prize for his orchestral composition Ignite, which was selected that same year as a recommended work at the International Rostrum of Composers in Vienna. Fagerlund was the resident composer at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam during the 2016/17 season.
