Tricky’s fake uncle but real brother of guitarist Caleb Quaye, and close to Iggy Pop, it’s the least one can say that Finley Quaye made a very high-profile and much-noticed entrance into the world of pop. Yet this first album features no prestigious guests and simply reveals the fascination this young Englishman has for reggae, pop and soul. With his warm, soft voice, cultivating a slight Jamaican accent to sound more authentic, Finley Quaye charms with “Even After All,” its jazzy guitars and sensual strings, gets you dancing to an acoustic reggae groove (“Your Love Gets Sweeter”), intrigues with “I Need A Lover,” an experimental trip-hop track, and carries the day with the bright “Sunday Shining” by Bob Marley, transformed into laid-back, brass-infused rock.
