Description
Oratorio in 3 acts, HWV 53. Recorded live at the Gottingen International Handel Festival, on May 18, 2019. David returns from battle carrying the head of the giant Goliath - in reward, King Saul promises him the hand of his horrified daughter Merab. But when David receives more popular praise than the king, Saul is consumed by jealousy. His daughter Michal advises David to appease the angry monarch with the soothing tensions of a harp. But Saul's rage is simply exacerbated, and he ultimately throws a spear at David. When he misses, Saul orders his son Jonathan to kill David... When setting this material from the Old Testament to music in 1738, George Frideric Handel worked for the first time with the librettist Charles Jennens, who later, for example, wrote the text for the Messiah. The work premiered on January 16, 1739, at the King's Theatre in Haymarket, London. Duration: 2 h 46 minutes.Buy Saul at the best price

Symphony:allegro - larghetto- allegro - andante larghetto
-
How excellent thy name, o Lord
-
An infant rais"d by thy command
-
Along the monster atheist strode
-
The youth inspired by thee, o Lord
-
How excellent thy name, o Lord
-
He comes, he comes! - o godlike youth!
-
Behold, o Kking, the brave, victorious youth
-
O king, your favours with delight
-
Oh early piety!
-
What abject thoughts a prince can have!
-
Yet think, on whom this honour you bestow
-
Birth and fortune I despise!
-
Go on, illustrious pair!
-
While yet thy tide of blood runs high
-
Thou, Merab, first in birth, be first in honour

My soul rejects the thought with scorn

Ah, lovely youth, wast thou designed

-
O Lord, whose providence
-
Preserve him for the glory of thy name

Hast thou obeyed my orders
-
Sin not, o king, against the youth
-
As great Jehovah live
-
From cities stormed, and battles won
-
Appear, my friend
-
Your words, o king, my loyal heart
-
Yes, he shall wed my daughter!

A father"s will has authorized my love

O fairest of ten thousand fair

Is there a man
-

Thy father is as cruel

At persecution I can laugh

Ye men of Judah, weep no more!
