After a devastating cancer diagnosis in September 2022, Adrian Sutton, composer of the music for "War Horse", "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" and other National Theatre productions, made the deliberate decision to change direction and devote himself exclusively to concert hall music. This resulted in a series of important new works, including his violin concerto, premiered in June 2023 at the Southbank Centre by Fenella Humphreys and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Sutton commented: "We all have limited time and resources. How can we best use them? In my situation, there is only one answer: I avoid wasting time and energy ruminating on things I cannot change. Instead, I decide how I respond to the facts - and I choose not to be a victim." This new album, containing world premiere recordings, reflects the composer's new direction. Adrian Sutton says of the album: "Here is my true musical self. My core musical DNA. The violin concerto (since I am a violinist myself) is for me the main course of this CD, but the other works are a showcase of what I have always wanted to do, from the refreshing and instrumentally stimulating 'A Fist Full of Fives' to the orchestral suites derived from my theatrical works. I am very proud of each of them and I am happy to have had the opportunity to share them."
