The quartet Opus13 was formed in 2014 and takes its name from Felix Mendelssohn's String Quartet in A minor, Op. 13, a passionate youthful work and the first piece they played together. Composed of two Norwegians (violinists Sonoko Miriam Welde and Edvard Erdal) and two Swedes (Albin Uusijärvi on viola and Daniel Thorell on cello), Opus13 wanted to record for their very first album the sublime String Quartet No. 1 by Grieg alongside Mendelssohn. For them, it was important to connect to the pure power of this music and to the Norwegian identity embodied in Grieg's music. Winner in 2025 of the first prize at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition and the Bordeaux International Competition, Opus13 received the Borletti-Buitoni Prize in 2026 as well as the BBC New Generation Artists label. Marked by pure and fragile emotions, this program concludes with a transcription of the famous Solveig's Song, from the play Peer Gynt, written in 1867 by Henrik Ibsen and set to music by Edvard Grieg.
