Cora Gilroy-Ware, also known as Fauness, was born in London but grew up in a small town in Connecticut. She was an outsider, preferring pop and R&B to the music of her peers. During her teenage years, she spent her holidays in London, composing between the ghostly suburbs of the East Coast and downtown London. Her outsider status was reinforced by the fact that, being of Afro-Caribbean and European mixed heritage, her family did not resemble other families in Connecticut. In the 2000s, she had to face a kind of deeply ingrained popular racism, expressed both consciously and unconsciously. No one talked about these things at the time, and she internalized a lot of feelings of shame. Music was less a creative outlet than a way of life, a sort of religion for her family. She studied the violin and learned enough guitar chords to write her first songs. It wasn't until 2018 that she began sharing them with the world, and after collaborating and performing live with Jam City (Jack Latham, who co-produced each of her releases), she finally embarked on a solo career. After four critically acclaimed EPs, this year sees the release of her debut album The Golden Ass. The Golden Ass is a dreamy electroacoustic infusion of folk, country, pop, and soft rock, with an underlying current of melancholic, sometimes psychedelic ambient. If you listen closely, you will hear traces of the millennial R&B that marked her adolescence. Her biggest influences are three singers who all emerged in the 1970s: Sandy Denny, Bonnie Raitt, and the lesser-known Valerie Carter. Both deeply personal and universal in its themes, the record is a beautiful journey into the mind of a perpetual outsider. Pressed on pink vinyl.
