The quintessence

Description

By bringing together tracks recorded between 1929 and 1943, the compilation entitled The Quintessence covers almost the entirety of Fats Waller’s career. It includes solo piano pieces and sides recorded by the pianist at the head of the Rhythm, his regular group since 1934. Deliberately, Alain Gerber left out from his selection Fats’s organ recordings, his appearances with groups such as Fletcher Henderson’s orchestra, the McKinney's Cotton Pickers and the Chocolate Dandies, as well as the sides where he is only accompanying blues singers. Taken together, these pieces make it possible to assess Fats’s qualities as a pianist, his outstanding talent as a composer, and the class with which he knew how to bring the most insipid tunes to life with humor and good cheer. One can also fully appreciate the cohesion of the Rhythm and the performances of musicians of the caliber of Al Casey, Gene Sedric, Bill Coleman and Herman Autrey. » (.)
