An Open Heart

Description

Different Strokes For Different Folks presents the very first vinyl reissue of Fantuzzi's psychedelic and folk funk classic. Fantuzzi, an iconic figure of the Woodstock generation where he performed and hosted concerts, made the cover of Newsweek during the festival, embodying the free and decadent spirit of the era. Having played and crossed paths with Richie Havens, Bob Dylan, and Stephen Stills, Fantuzzi combined these influences with the approaches of Timothy Leary and Ram Dass to create this debut album, released in 1978. The lo-fi approach belies the late 1970s, instead recalling the hazy, soulful atmosphere of the late 1960s psychedelic soul and folk scenes. The record is divided into two distinct sides: "Fast Side" and "Slow Side." The fast side offers a series of groovers with snapping percussion and an elastic rhythm section, with oscillating congas and sitars. The slow side highlights Fantuzzi's singer-songwriter and folk side, often sliding sublimely into a psychedelic trip; "Deep Inside" is particularly remarkable, with its ghostly backing vocals and doubled effects, yielding a wonderful result. The reissue box set includes an exclusive interview with Fantuzzi himself, offering a fascinating insight into the making of the record and a well-lived life. Also included are several photos from Fantuzzi's private collection that shed light on the world of free festivals, joyful music-making, and community life.
