Fanfare Ciocarlia, one of the most famous brass bands in the world, celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2016. Hailing from a small village in northeastern Romania, the band set out to conquer stages around the world with their extremely exciting live performances while their albums reached the top of the European World Music Charts, driven by crazy DJs and inspiring countless imitators. Today with Onwards to Mars!, Fanfare Ciocarlia has taken another giant step: here the band delves into its rural Romanian roots, while bearing witness to what they have learned during their travels. Longtime fans will appreciate the earthy touch of roots music with the presence of two traditional Romanian songs sung by senior Radulescu Lazar and the very slow Balkan Blues of Doina. Fans will also recognize a new arrangement of Mista Lobaloba, a long-time hit song. Things get intriguing when the band offers a cover of Bunica Bate Toba by the very popular Moldovan rock group Zdob si Zdub. And things get completely wild when they invite Romanian gypsy blues singer Lulian Canaf to sing the classic screaming hit by Jay Hawkins, I Put a Spell On You! Another collaboration is Fiesta de Negritos, which the band recorded in Medellín with Puerto Candelaria, one of the leaders of Colombia’s Cumbia scene. To dig into the groove of Latin-Balkan groove! There are also 7 tracks here written by the famous composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Koby Israélite, including 4 that he composed specifically for Fanfare Ciocarlia. Onwards To Mars! is an album to savor and to party with! Fanfare Ciocãrlia in a few words... Fanfare Ciocarlia is undoubtedly the most remarkable Balkan brass band in the world. When a group finds itself at the top like them, the undisputed heavyweight champion, it is faced with two options: either rest on its laurels and simply repeat itself, or seek out new challenges. Fanfare Ciocarlia is made up of greedy men, who have seen too many Balkan brass bands fall into the farce of playing standards at breakneck speed, or letting DJs who do not have enough musical ear exploit them as decoration on a lame electro beat. They therefore chose to expand the musical vocabulary of Balkan brass. The musical encounter with Adrian Raso was the perfect match for this challenge.
