In 2005, Fall Out Boy returned with "From Under The Cork Tree," and clearly, this album is a killer. Dance Dance and Sugar We're Going Down are now classics, but at the time, these tracks were new anthems. When discussing the creation of this album, Pete Wentz (bassist and lyricist) admits that the band had no idea what they were doing. You can't tell that from listening to it. However, this album is clearly inspired by Pete Wentz's depressive past: while some may be perplexed by this idea, the title I've Got A Dark Alley And A Bad Idea That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth is a perfect example. Whether it's songs like Champagne For My Real Friends or Get Busy Living Or Get Busy Dying, the idea is there: the bassist hasn't always had an easy life, and many resonate with these lyrics. The breakthrough will surely come thanks to the media attention surrounding the album. Thanks to the series One Tree Hill, the band will gain significant visibility, allowing them to expand their fanbase. From then on, they say goodbye to playing in basements and invest in real stages, sometimes much larger than they could have imagined. Today, Fall Out Boy has a reputation that no one can question, but From Under The Cork Tree will always be the album that gave the band its identity. The sound was rawer, more rock, and perhaps even more punk.
