Description

Born in the early 80s in the north of England, this duo made up of Ben Watt and Tracy Thorn long championed a very acoustic and melodic music, in which various bossa nova, folk and jazzy influences coexisted. Despite a few undeniable successes in this field, it was a stroke of fate that would trigger the group’s success. Stricken by a serious illness, Ben Watt made use of his long convalescence to take an interest in the new currents of English electronic music (jungle, trip-hop, drum'n'bass) and completely redirected the group’s music by injecting slow drum'n'bass pulses that blend wonderfully with Tracy Thorn’s deep, melancholic voice. This unique cocktail of organic and electronic music, close in spirit to the experiments of Massive Attack’s "Blue Lines", would win over a wide audience. Driven by the single "Missing", a formidable slow-motion dance machine remixed by Todd Terry, a wizard of English electronica, "Amplified Heart" (1994) instantly went around the world.
