The seven compositions commonly referred to as works for lute by Johann Sebastian Bach, despite more than a century of research, do not seem to want to fully reveal the mystery of their origin, their true instrumental destination, and Bach's decidedly abstract conception of the instrument, the lute, which in its final evolution continued to attract the attention of the highest musical lineage after nearly three centuries of glory. The mystery has not deterred performers from these compositions, which Bach did not compile into a single cycle, as he did for the works for solo violin and cello, and perhaps made them even more stimulating, especially considering that within seventy years, the lute was destined to disappear from the musical scene. There are moments when, to discover or define who we are, we must confront the unknown. Evangelina Mascardi has done this with this extraordinary recording, which, in addition to being the first by a woman, writes an important new interpretative page, the result of artistic maturity, critical reflection, and original instrumental research.
