La conversation : Pièces pour théorbe avec récitant
Description
A record whose content is deliberately controversial, unreasonable according to the label itself! It brings together a chamber musician of King Louis XIV, Robert de Visée, and the libertine and provocateur Théophile de Viau. Accompanying Visée’s music and Dumestre’s theorbo, Eugène Green delivers Viau’s texts in the style of Baroque declamation. A world away from the modern, even ultra-modern, expression used in today’s theater, Green seeks to render this 17th-century poetry with the intonation proper to it, rightly considering that the textual, semantic, and rhythmic content blend wonderfully with the theatrical pronunciation of his century. In a way, the textual equivalent of the musicological research undertaken over the past few decades by a Leonhardt or a Harnoncourt: neither retrograde, nor conservative, nor outdated, but seeking to restore Baroque theater to its “original version,” which makes it possible to see the unfolding of the text in time in a different light. Purely from an aesthetic standpoint: with certain inflections specific to Catalan or Quebec French, Green’s diction is simply beautiful and musical. Dare to take the plunge! © Abeille Musique
