The album So Predictable brings together for the first time Étienne Guéreau on piano and composition, Marc Buronfosse on double bass, and Gautier Garrigue on drums. With this title, in the form of a play on words, the very concept of expectation is called into question. Where does the predictable stop, and how does it give way to the unpredictable? So Predictable radically reconnects with interplay and seeks to establish a permanent dialogue between the instruments. The moments of mutual listening (even the silences) are numerous and engage the listener, playing with their expectations. Contrary to a technical escalation or a desire for power, the voices combine, operate in echo, revealing new perspectives to one another. Also a novelist, the aesthetic led by Étienne Guéreau gives pride of place to narration, to an almost literary vision of musical creation. Each track on So Predictable tells a story, each melody embodies a character, sometimes naive, sometimes raucous, always complex, each solo offers a digression, an incursion into a complementary universe, aligned with the theme and almost built according to the classic rules of storytelling: initiation, doubt, mistakes, twists, climax, transformation. A narrative arc that is quite swing, in short. Beyond tangible pleasure, the trio pays particular attention to touch and strike, and as one listens, a delicate and personal way of shaping soundscapes is revealed. Far from rapid chatter or dynamic artifices, the virtuosity of So Predictable lies elsewhere, constitutive of a blending of harmonic colors and an approach free from posturing, entirely dedicated to a message... ultimately quite unpredictable.
