A brilliant instrumentalist with revolutionary ideas on both alto saxophone and bass clarinet, which he very early made his specialty, Eric Dolphy holds a unique place in the history of jazz. Closely associated with all the great modernists of the turn of the 1960s (from George Russell to Ornette Coleman, via John Coltrane in the midst of a personal revolution and, of course, Charles Mingus, whose irreplaceable alter ego he was until his premature death on June 29, 1964), this eternal outsider nevertheless remains irreducible to any current, so much does his style, a blend of order and disorder, resemble nothing catalogued. Recorded on April 1, 1960, “Outward Bound” is his first album as a leader and immediately offers a striking glimpse of this singularity, which would only grow more pronounced with time. At the head of a powerfully organic quintet driven by the great drummer Roy Haynes and threaded through with the flamboyant, virtuosic improvisations of trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy presents music that is both cerebral and instinctive, still rooted in the hard bop aesthetic in both form and references, but already deeply original in the insidious way it frees itself from the codes and undermines the traditional foundations of jazz, in an extraordinary expressive freedom, wholly lyrical abstraction.
