After Les Frères Jacques and Les Quatre Barbus, the four singers of Entre 2 Caisses, after a quarter of a century of good and loyal service, Dominique Bouchery, Bruno Martins, Jean-Michel Mouron, and Gilles Raymond take their leave, leaving us this lovely compilation enhanced with 2 unreleased tracks, made up of both songs from their repertoire and others created to showcase their talent: between silky thrift and haute couture.
The cradle of this quartet was Barbaroque, a troupe from Drôme that then offered a conference two-thirds serious and one-quarter wacky (the rest lost in conjecture) about Mozart. Baroque and drawn, among other incongruities, by the barrel organ.
Dominique, Gilles, Bruno, Hal, and Jean-Michel then perform a recital that draws from the sea spray: “We started Entre 2 Caisses just to sing sea shanties.” With their faces of wine merchants, our fellows make honey of a humanist and social song tinged with wine and girls who sell themselves. And, as beardless as they are, they position themselves as worthy heirs of Les Quatre Barbus. As singers, they prefer the term, more precious and modest at the same time, of chantistes, an outdated term taken from the Middle Ages, which resurfaces one fine day in a song by the Swiss Sarclo in praise of the Helvetian Bel Hubert.
To say that Entre 2 Caisses was a joy is a pleonasm. Joy, yes, as were Les Quatre Barbus and Les Frères Jacques in their time. One might believe that each generation deserves an exceptional quartet that elevates song to unsuspected heights. Our chantistes have earned all our love, which this double album will prolong for a long time.
