Description

The sacred music of Luigi Boccherini occupies only a very small part of his work. However, it is known that he wrote pieces of a sacred nature throughout his life. The work that, more than any other, represents Boccherini's vocal production to a wide audience is the Stabat Mater G. 532. It is the original version of this Stabat Mater for a solo voice and chamber ensemble, composed in 1781 for Don Luis de Bourbon, that is recorded here.
The Quintet op. 45 no. 1 is a little-known work. It was written by Boccherini during the month of March 1792, at the time when he was employed at the court of Frederick William II, King of Prussia.
Defined as "Opéra Grande" by the Boccherini classification, this quintet is considered one of the most mature works of Boccherini's German period: at a time of major development of the string quintet, the composer achieves here a rare harmonic and melodic balance, where the two cellos, without ever doubling each other, gain an autonomy of almost symphonic scope, and thus erase any trace of continuo.
