De splendid courtly polyphonic songs that were sung in the Loire region at the court of King Louis XI. The last embers of medieval art in which the radiance of the Renaissance is already emerging.
The famous early music ensemble Diabolus in Musica introduces us to masterpieces drawn from six precious manuscripts — which musicologists have called the “
Chansonniers du Val de Loire ” — created during the reign of Louis XI, around 1470.
These “ chansonniers ” are valuable collections of courtly polyphonic songs written by the greatest poets of the time (François Villon, Charles d'Orléans, etc.) and set to music by the finest composers of the second half of the 15th century (Jean Ockeghem, Antoine Bunois, Guillaume Dufay, etc.). The king's choice to establish his residence in Tours favored the development of court life in this region along the Loire. These courtly songs reflect an art, both poetic and musical, that sublimates the heritage of the Middle Ages and heralds the nearby Renaissance.
Under the direction of its new artistic director, Nicolas Sansarlat, the ensemble Diabolus in Musica delivers a grand interpretation of sixteen of these courtly polyphonic songs drawn from the manuscripts, also enhanced by the sounds of medieval instruments (harp, vielle, lute, rebec, and clavichord).
The ensemble Diabolus in Musica collaborates with American scholar Jane Alden, a specialist in medieval music, to produce this illustrated book-CD, richly adorned with images and illuminations extracted from the original manuscripts.
