While it may sometimes seem that the art of the jazz piano trio has reached its limits—given the legacy of great artists like Art Tatum, Bill Evans, Cecil Taylor, Ahmad Jamal, and Keith Jarrett—the new recording by Italian master Enrico Pieranunzi is a triumphant affirmation of the durability and creative vitality of this formation. Working with two of the most musical musicians in the field, bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron, Pieranunzi largely avoids the repertoire of Broadway songs in favor of original compositions colored by his deep love and understanding of jazz, but also by his knowledge of classical and baroque music, folk, and other popular music. - - The title Hindsight may imply a look back, but Pieranunzi acknowledges that this is the only way to move music forward. The themes here may seem both familiar and completely new. It is music of great generosity and openness, not a grandiose and self-conscious statement from a great artist resting on his own reputation, but a promise to the audience affirming that jazz is far from running out of new things to say and new feelings to express. (Brian Morton). - - Under the supervision of music producer Ermanno Basso, Hindsight was recorded live in December 2019 at the Auditorium of La Seine Musicale in Boulogne-Billancourt (France) by Stefano Amerio, mixed in January 2020 by Stefano Amerio at Artesuono Recording Studio in Cavalicco (UD), Italy, and mastered by Danilo Ross. - - - - A trio that no longer needs an introduction... Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron, or rather his "American trio," or better yet: "the trio of my heart," as the Roman pianist once said. The musical adventure of this admirable trio has become, since its inception (their first performance together dates back to 1984), a symbol of a way of making music that unites formal elegance with expressive depth.
