Revolution

Description

Mondially and unanimously regarded as the greatest flutist of today, Emmanuel Pahud has recorded a program of concertos for flute from the time of the French Revolution. This album brings together rare concertos by Gluck, Pleyel, Devienne, and Gianella, and reveals how the writing and construction of the transverse flute underwent its own revolution during this tumultuous period. Once again, Emmanuel Pahud dives into the history and evolution of his instrument during the second half of the 18th century. "Revolution takes you through 3 decades of flute concertos around the storm that was the storming of the Bastille in 1789; it is also a natural echo to the previous album, Le Roi Flûtiste, dedicated to an early golden age of the flute on the occasion of the tercentenary of Frederick the Great in 2012. I have indeed chosen to dedicate myself today to another golden age of the instrument, this time around the French Revolution - an echo from Devienne's flute to Quantz's, from music around Mozart to that around Bach, from Revolution to Monarchy, from a French school to a German school, from a generation stemming from the Classical to a generation stemming from the Baroque, both connected by the Enlightenment and in search of a better world freed from the yoke of previous generations: a revolutionary ideal."
