Born to an Italian father and an Icelandic mother, Emiliana Torrini, then a teenager, enrolled at Reykjavík’s opera school. After numerous collaborations with various groups, Emiliana decided to record an album of jazz and blues covers as a birthday gift for her father. The album would remain at the top of the Icelandic charts for many weeks, and would later allow her to sign with the One Little Indian label. Her first album, love in the time of science, released in 1999 and produced by Roland Orzabal (Tears For Fears), propelled her onto the international stage. It revealed her lyrical pop with melancholic moods, earning her a comparison with Björk. Emiliana then wrote the theme for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and also wrote the track “Slow” for Kylie Minogue. This was followed by two albums, “Fishmeran's Woman” and “Me & Armini,” which established Emiliana Torrini as one of the most prominent figures on the electronic scene. Her songwriting and composing talents are once again highlighted on Tookah, from the very first title track. A pop sound with acoustic arrangements blended with electronic textures, over which her delicate, sometimes childlike voice is laid to create an intoxicating atmosphere.
