A native of Portland, Oregon, Elliott Smith, whose real name was Steven Paul Smith, is a folk-punk artist known to the general public for his Miss Misery, composed for the Good Will Hunting soundtrack in 1997 and nominated for the Oscars. It was that same year that this third, highly melodic album was released, with much richer instrumentation that lightens lyrics that are nevertheless darker. Died in 2003 under rather unclear circumstances, at only 34 years old, Elliott Smith here proves that he was indeed one of the most gifted songwriters of his generation.
