Over time, Mats Eilertsen has become one of the most well-known Norwegian jazz musicians and one of the major double bass players on the European scene. Enjoying a long relationship with ECM, he has been recording for Hubro since the label's inception 10 years ago. This new album, with its unusual structure, is a personal project whose materials were gathered by Eilertsen, who also incorporates contributions recorded separately by each of his star guests: Geir Sundstøl adds guitars and banjo on two tracks, while guitarist Eivind Aarset and percussionist Per Oddvar Johansen each play on one track. Mats Eilertsen, Arve Henriksen, and Thomas Strønen make up three-quarters of the original lineup of the influential group Food, whose self-titled debut album (Feral Records, 1999) remains a significant starting point for a new Nordic and European improvisation scene that continues to expand. Strønen is featured on electronics and percussion on three tracks, while Henriksen's unmistakable trumpet sound is identifiable on the beautiful "Appreciate," which closes the album. Reveries & Revelations offers an immersive blend of sound and music that reveals a wealth of richly allusive and atmospheric details. The sonic elements that make up the 10 distinct tracks of the album engage the listener's imagination, evoking musical landscapes whose delicate swirls and dreamlike fragments suggest the concept of "reverie" to which the title alludes.
