Edvard Grieg Collection

Description

Everything Grieg or almost: the abundant Brilliant box set is a bargain, offering an ideal panorama of a catalog known for only a few gems but rich in masterpieces. It’s a great idea to revisit the vast anthology of orchestral works according to Bjarte Engeset, who sought out the Nordic colors of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra for Naxos and was the first, before Ruud or Adland, to propose philological readings of the music from the scenes such as the Symphony, the Piano Concerto (featuring a magnificent Havard Gimse), the dance suites, and who knew how to bring out the fantastic dimension that emerges from the depths of Grieg's soul: just listen to the grand Second Scene of Olav Trygvason, this opera unfortunately remaining in fragments where the prophetic mezzo of Marianne E. Andersen appears. The melodies are all there too, defended by a perfect singing team. The chamber music is illustrated by beautiful performances, Sinaiski for some of the Violin Sonatas among others, but at the center of the box, you will enter Grieg's secret lair where he spent most of his time at the piano: Hakon Austbö has recorded the essence of the piano works, a poet for the Lyric Pieces, you must hear him grasping the rough timbres of the popular dance suites, then find the dark momentum of the Sonata, where you can hear him wandering through the pastoral idylls of the Humoresques, the Album Leaves, all of Grieg's most secret music that invents this language of sound emotions from which Debussy will draw inspiration, revealed by an inspired guide who is also one of the greatest pianists of our time.
