In 1963, the Argentine composer Ariel Ramirez wrote a mass composed on popular themes from South America. Misa criolla includes the five main usual parts of the Catholic liturgy (Kyrie, Credo, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei) but incorporates many instruments from Andean folklore. It conveys an incredible spiritual force and an exhilarating sonic vitality. Alongside this mass are sacred pieces from South American colonial baroque in the native language (Bolivia).
