Nathan Harrell East (born December 8, 1955, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a jazz, R&B, and rock bassist.
Nathan East has recorded, performed, and co-written with Anita Baker, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Joe Satriani, Sting, Quincy Jones, Al Jarreau, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock, and David Benoit. He co-wrote Easy Lover for Phil Collins and Philip Bailey. Nathan East was a studio and touring musician for Eric Clapton from 1986 to 2005.
He is one of the founding members of the jazz group Fourplay, with Bob James (keyboards), Lee Ritenour (later replaced by Larry Carlton, who himself was succeeded by Chuck Loeb in 2010) and Harvey Mason (drums). He has participated in over 2000 albums to date (Beyoncé, Daft Punk, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Ritchie, to name a few).
Considered one of the masters of contemporary electric bass (particularly the 5 and 6-string bass), he produced a training DVD called "The Business of Bass".
He joined the legendary Californian group Toto for a summer tour in Europe in 2010 and also participated in the summer tours of 2011, 2012, and 2013. From the latter tour, a live album was recorded in Poland (released on April 28, 2014).
In 2013, he collaborated with Daft Punk on several tracks from the album Random Access Memories, including the singles Get Lucky and Lose Yourself to Dance.
After being nominated for a Grammy Award for his first solo album, Nathan East recruited some renowned musicians to participate in his new album. Such as Yolanda Adams, Philip Bailey, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, and members of Earth Wind & Fire, to name just a few.
He covers on this new album standards such as "Higher Ground" (Stevie Wonder) and "Over The Rainbow" (Harold Arlen). But also some personal compositions.
