Originally released in 2005, "Illumination" was both a critical and commercial success. The band invested heavily to deliver an ambitious and successful album that met the standards of the time while respecting their initial philosophy and the high demands they always placed on their music. The album was produced by the band's legendary founder, Maurice White, supported by Phillip Bailey. They were assisted by none other than Will.i.Am, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Raphael Saadiq, Darren Henson & Keith Pelzer, Brian McKnight, and Organized Noize. The result is modern productions blended with classic Soul. The songwriting, which has been the band's trademark, is still excellent: catchy melodies, effective choruses, festive atmospheres... And the guest artists are prestigious: Raphael Saadiq (Tony Toni Toné), Will.i.Am (Black Eyed Peas), Floetry, Kelly Rowland (Destiny's Child), Big Boi (Outkast), Sleepy Brown, Floetry, Musiq Soulchild, Kenny G, and Brian McKnight. Upon its release, "Illumination" reached number 8 on the Top Hip-Hop/R&B chart and was nominated for Grammy and Soul Train Awards in the "Best R&B/Soul Album" categories. The tracks "Pure Gold" and "The Way You Move" were also nominated for Grammys, in the Producer of the Year and Best R&B Performance categories, respectively.
