Half of the duo Birds On A Wire with singer Rosemary Standley of Moriarty, the 31-year-old singer and cellist Dom La Nena makes her grand solo return with Tempo. With this new album, the Brazilian-born, Paris-based artist has created a series of crystalline moments — sometimes sunny, often dreamy, and occasionally interspersed with that beautiful nostalgia Brazilians call "saudade." Tempo is composed of lush synthesizers, strings, and percussion, but in reality the album is a remarkable demonstration of Dom La Nena's arranging and orchestrating abilities. She created all the sounds on the album herself, using layers of her own voice, her cello, and a few piano pieces. Even the percussion sounds were made on the cello. "My intention on this album was to explore new ways of using my instrument, to change the original sound of the instrument and take it elsewhere," she says.
