The third CD from the philharmonie zuidnederland brings together works by the Dutch composer Hendrik Andriessen and Hector Berlioz. It features a milestone of Andriessen's French repertoire, the song cycle Miroir de peine (1923) with texts by Henri Ghéon, showcasing the very expressive singing of mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn. It also includes Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique. This work was written at the end of a period of "mental overload" caused by his love for Harriet Constance Smithson. With this true gem, Épisode de la vie d’un artiste, Symphonie fantastique in its original five-part title, he employed all techniques to captivate the audience. Berlioz leaves nothing to the imagination.
