Critical Thot is the bold new collaborative album by rapper and producer Sha Ray, hailing from the Bay Area, and electronic producer and musician DJ Haram. These two uncompromising artists redefine rap and experimental sounds. Their collaboration is intriguing: Haram forms the duo 700 Bliss with rapper and poet Moor Mother and has several solo albums to her credit (including the highly acclaimed Beside Myself, 2025) as well as prestigious collaborations with BbyMutha, Fever Ray, Ghais Guevara, and Armand Hammer. As for Sha Ray, although Critical Thot is her first official album, her reputation as an emerging talent precedes her. Haram became aware of her potential in 2022 during a Sha Ray concert in Brooklyn. An Armand Hammer and DJ Haram concert in Los Angeles was the starting point for this collaboration. Sha Ray traveled from the Bay Area to meet Haram, and even though they recorded nothing that day, it was the springboard for a cross-country collaboration that resulted in Critical Thot. The album was entirely created remotely: Haram composed beats in Brooklyn and sent them to Sha Ray, who would send back demos and notes. They got to know each other, artistically and personally, while working on this project. The writing is incisive and refreshingly candid. Sha Ray quickly establishes herself as a distinctive artist, expertly mastering DJ Haram's most complex productions. Haram draws from her repertoire to create richly layered beats, oscillating between the experimental and the abrasive, with an enchanting sensuality and a dark, unsettling atmosphere. The powerful and punchy percussion overlays intricate details and subtle pads. An engaging trap track melds into a deluge of strings. A minimalist industrial soundscape slowly transforms into a devastating rap track. Sha Ray effortlessly weaves through every drum break and synth. Critical Thot includes contributions from Nappy Nina, JWords, and Archangel.
