Dirk Powell, a multi-Grammy Award-winning fiddler, banjo player and singer, is admired by his peers and by those who call upon him for his expertise in the roots of American music. His album « Wake », released in 2026, offers us evocative and moving music that explores the multiple meanings of the word: the wake we all leave behind, like that of a ship, which tells our story and marks our path before fading into silence; the wake we share in celebrating the life of a departed loved one, like a joyful New Orleans parade; and the awakening to presence, that simple verb that invites us to open our eyes once again to the truth of the sun that animates us. The album resonates with human and natural sounds, from handmade banjos and fiddles to shimmering electric guitars, to the raw sounds of the swamps, trains and carnivals of Louisiana. Both intimate and expansive, this album, from powerful percussion to cascading harmonies, to the softest and most intimate whispers, takes the listener on an intense emotional journey, bringing them back to their starting point in a different state of mind. It is his first commercial album since 2020.
