Diana Damrau has risen to the highest level of international coloratura sopranos for several years. She dedicates her new recording to the heroines of Donizetti: Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, and Elizabeth I (Roberto Devereux). These three operas about Tudor queens are fascinating bel canto works. These queens, both strong and vulnerable, have submitted their entire being to the demands of the crown since their birth, with all the duties and burdens that entails. Donizetti takes these queens through an intense range of emotions and shows them in all their femininity. His music allows great freedom to the voice and supports it with a climate, energy, and wonderful melodies. Diana Damrau shines brightly in these roles, thanks in particular to the exceptional musicality and energy of maestro Antonio Pappano and his Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
