Cripple Crow is probably Devendra Banhart's most accessible, warm, and inviting album. His visionary music prompts the listener to ask many questions, including whether the artist is deceiving them or not. As suggested by the striking, impressive, and potentially self-parodic cover image, Devendra has done his best to surround himself with some of his most talented friends: Adam Forkner from White Rainbow, Andy Cabic from Vetiver, the free-folk group Feathers, and producer Thom Monahan, among others. But this is not a fantasy album; it is sober and very rooted in the style of the early 70s. Recorded in Bearsville, near Woodstock, New York, it features touches of Gilberto Gil, George Harrison, Donovan, T. Rex, Randy Newman, and Bobby Charles.
