The story of one of the most talented power trios in metal begins with a band called Diamond. Before bassist Ron Royce (Ron Broder) and guitarist Tommy T. Baron (Tommy Vetterli) formed Coroner, they played in a traditional heavy rock band named Diamond. After only three concerts in total, Ron and Tommy left because they wanted to create their own band. "That's why we started looking for a drummer," explains the guitarist. "A friend of ours, another musician, knew that Marky (Marquis Marky, real name Markus Edelmann) was looking for a guitarist and a bassist, so he introduced us." Thus, Coroner as we know them today was born. The first result of the collaboration between Tommy, Ron, and Marky was the demo of "Death Cult," featuring "Spectators Of Sin," "Spiral Dream," "Aerial Combat," and "The Invincible." "When I listen to it today, of course, I find it a bit funny sometimes," laughs Tommy Vetterli. "But at the time, we were still searching for our own sound, and we were composing freely, doing what we wanted and what brought us joy. That's how it was." Tom Fischer from Celtic Frost sings on three of the four songs, except for the instrumental "Aerial Combat." In addition to that, he also wrote the lyrics for "Death Cult." Tommy Vetterli: "Up until then, we were focusing solely on the music, without thinking about the lyrics yet. Normally, that's what the singer would do." 250 copies of "Death Cult" were produced, professionally duplicated. The demo received a lot of coverage in metal magazines at the time. "Yes, we received excellent reactions to our first release, all over the fanzines," says the guitarist, "for us, it was really amazing that someone had written about us." Shortly after, in early 1987, Coroner signed a contract with Noise Records. However, Karl Walterbach did not sign the band based on the "Death Cult" demo. Instead, they sent Walterbach a rudimentary rehearsal tape recorded on a ghetto blaster, with bassist Ron taking over vocal duties for the first time. Remastered and restored by Patrick W.
