Future Development is the third album by Del the Funky Homosapien and, after his departure from the Elektra label, his first solo album for his independent label, Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings. Initially released on cassette in 1997, then reissued on CD and vinyl in 2002, the album largely relies on production by Del himself, with contributions from members of the Hiero collective: A-Plus, Opio, and Toure. The only feature is from Casual, also a member of the collective, who joins Del on the energetic track "Checking Out The Rivalry." Musically, Future Development bridges the powerful funk style of Del's first album and the darker, more futuristic sounds explored on No Need for Alarm. Lyrically, Del sharpens his fast and precise flow, addressing life in Oakland, societal observations, and hip-hop culture, all with a mix of humor, clarity, and a great mastery of words. Ultimately, this album offers a glimpse into his evolution, from raw talent to a more mature songwriter conceptually. It remains an important yet overlooked chapter in Del's evolution, revealing the beginnings of the creativity and independence that would define much of his career thereafter.
