Deftones

Description

The fourth album by Deftones impresses. Unlike other metal bands, the Californians know how to write songs, much like the late Faith No More. To be convinced, one only needs to listen to the beautiful Deathblow, a gem with a melancholic western vibe (perhaps due to the harmonica) or the electronic and "garbagienne" nuances of Lucky You (which can be found on the soundtrack of "Matrix Reloaded"). But Chino, the singer, doesn't forget to scream, and Stephen Carpenter's deep guitars saturate, as evidenced by the furious and desperate introductory track, Hexagram. It's a fact; mixing melodies and a wall of sound, many try, but few succeed. Minerva, a melodic and furious single, showcases the excellence of Deftones in this risky register. Similarly, Anniversary of An Uninteresting Event and its piano notes evoke emotions in a style close to Devin Townsend (The Death Of Music). "Deftones" perpetuates the tradition of great self-titled albums.
