For nearly three decades, the underground scene has always been buzzing about Defeated Sanity. The band is revered for having infused old school death metal with jazzy chaos and the technical precision of a classical composer. But when these four maniacs thought about their seventh album, the idea was to take it easy on the brainteasers and get back to the practice of neck-breaking. Chronicles of Lunacy is not Defeated Sanity for beginners. Whether it pounds out blast beats or bursts between the cymbals, founding member Lille Gruber keeps changing tempo throughout the single "The Odour of Sanctity". But this album draws a jagged central line that leads back to Defeated Sanity’s brutal origins. Its concept is seized, in all its twisted aspects, by the delirious thinking that warps our minds. "Alienation gives birth to relentless hatred," growls Josh Welshman from the depths of his gut, while longtime bassist Jacob Schmidt pounds the mix with gravity-defying slams. To recapture the raw low end of Psalms of the Moribund, the fans’ favorite album, Defeated Sanity entered Thousand Cave studios in January 2024 with producer Colin Marston. "Accelerate the Rot" is now the fastest track in their catalog thanks to new guitarist Vaughn Stoffey, whose unsettling dissonances and pig squeals shred the song like a rusty butcher’s knife.
