Dee Dee Bridgewater returns to her roots…Memphis, Tennessee.
Born in Memphis – an American city with an evocative name when it comes to music and social struggles – Dee Dee Bridgewater received an authentic and invaluable legacy. During her childhood, she spent most of her time glued to the local WDIA radio station in Memphis, the first radio station in the United States to broadcast only African American music.
Her father also worked there as a DJ under the name "Matt the Platter Cat".
This sublime record is not only a return to the sources for Dee Dee, it is also a delightful, personal, and innovative reinterpretation of Blues and R&B classics. On this album, recorded at the famous Willie Mitchell’s Royal Studios, Dee Dee is accompanied by the voices of the legendary Stax Academy Choir, and the no less legendary Kirk Whalum (Aretha Franklin, Bob James, Marcus Miller, Whitney Houston, Quincy Jones, …).
Co-produced by Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kirk Whalum (who is also from Memphis), the album contains great popular standards such as "Try a Little Tenderness" by Otis Redding, "The Thrill is Gone" by B. B. King, "Why? (Am I Treated So Bad)" by the Staple Singers, "I Can't Stand the Rain" by Ann Peebles, "Hound Dog" and "Don’t Be Cruel", among others.
After 40 years of career and 3 Grammy Awards, Dee Dee Bridgewater is nothing less than a legend of American music!
