Debo means "collective effort" in Amharic, the official Ethiopian language. A concept that is obvious in the group's ethical work, a mix of Ethiopian voices, American soul and funk, and Eastern European instruments (accordion, violin, horns, and drums). Although devoted to the groove of the 70s, the jazz-funk band from Boston also draws from contemporary Ethiopian pop sounds, while developing its own compositions. DEBO BAND stands out with deeply multicultural art and exchanges, through several-month immersions in East Africa, and musical nights with groups such as ETHIO COLOR OF ETHIOPIA and the CULTURE MUSICAL CLUB OF ZANZIBAR. While DEBO BAND is not a "political" group in the overt sense of the term, its cultural commitment is nonetheless sincere.
